Looking back at our preseason as a whole, I believe we can be proud of the foundation we have built, while also being very clear about the areas where we still need to improve.
The preseason is always an important period because it gives a team the opportunity to discover itself, to understand its strengths and weaknesses, and to begin developing the identity that will accompany it throughout the season.
The three games we played against BBL opponents were particularly valuable in this regard. They gave us the opportunity to compete against very high-level teams and showed us many positive aspects of our group. At the same time, they clearly highlighted some of the areas where we still need to grow.
We need to become better at managing the different moments of a game — understanding when to push, when to slow down, when to make the simple play, when to take responsibility and, above all, how to react when the game becomes difficult.
As a team, we still have work to do in the construction of our offense, our decision making, our spacing and our ability to play with greater consistency. Defensively, we need to continue improving our organization, communication and ability to stay connected for longer periods.
One factor that has also affected our preseason has been the availability of the group. We have had several periods with players unavailable for different reasons, which inevitably reduced the continuity of our collective work. This became particularly evident in the final part of the preseason, where we felt the consequences in terms of our physical and mental energy.
I think this was visible especially in the second part of the game against Oldenburg and throughout the game against Kirchheim. This is something we absolutely do not want to become part of our identity. We want to be a team that is able to maintain its energy, concentration and competitiveness regardless of the circumstances.
At the same time, we have to understand that building a team is a process. We know that the journey is long, and that some of the things we are working on today will require time, repetition and consistency before they become natural habits.
These are challenges that we expected to face, and they are exactly the kind of challenges that preseason should help us identify.
But for me, preseason is about much more than basketball systems and tactical preparation.
Preseason is the moment when you build the foundations of the standards that you want your team to live by throughout the season.
Every season will inevitably bring difficult moments. There will be injuries, losses, fatigue, frustration, pressure and situations that we cannot predict today. You cannot wait for those moments to arrive before deciding how your team is going to react.
You have to build those habits beforehand.
And I believe that, in this aspect, we have made important progress.
We have built a very serious group. A group that cares about the program, about the project and about what we are trying to create together.
I have seen players and staff willing to work, willing to listen, willing to challenge themselves and, most importantly, willing to understand that what we are building is bigger than any individual.
We still have a lot to improve. We are not where we want to be yet, and we should never be satisfied simply because we have worked hard.
But I believe we have established some important foundations.
And that is what makes this group exciting.
We have a lot of humility about where we are and how much work is still ahead of us, but at the same time we have a lot of ambition about what we want to build.
Maybe, in our own small way, we can try to create something that goes beyond a single season. Something that represents the people who are part of this team, this club and this city.
And if there is one idea that I would like to keep in front of us throughout the season, it is this:
“We want to leave the Heidelberg jersey in a better place than where we found it.”
That should be our ambition every day — not only in terms of results, but in terms of the standards we set, the culture we create, the way we work and the way we represent Heidelberg.
The preseason has given us the foundation. Now the real work begins.
